If you are interested in wildlife and outdoors recreation this is a place to visit. You can stop by the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge. Covering 46,000 acres of land and water, the Carolina Sandhills Wildlife Refuge refuge supports a wide variety of plants and animals.
Cheraw State Park, offers plenty of hiking trails, a golf course, a driving range, and a 332-acre lake. A group of Cypress trees will be found at the upper end of the lake. Camping and vacation cabins are available.
H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area is loaded with equestrian facilities, including stables, kennels, corrals, and arenas. You will also find some ponds, campgrounds, and a meeting hall. More than twenty miles of equestrian trails wind around the park.
Sand Hills State Forest consists of 46,000 acres of sand located between the piedmont and the coastal plain. Since its aquisition, Sand Hills has been used as a demonstration area for forest management. Thirteen stocked fish ponds have been constructed and are open year-round.
Sugar Loaf Mountain has an unusual geological phenomenon towering 100 feet above the surrounding terrain. Composed of sand, it was at one time capped with sandstone, much of which has now weathered away. Sugar Loaf is one of the most popular recreation areas in the sand hills region. Opportunities abound for other forms of recreation such as bird watching, nature study, primitive camping, and horseback riding.
