Clarendon's historic roots run deep, having produced five governors of the state and being the site of many of the Revolutionary War campaigns of General Francis Marion, commonly known as "The Swamp Fox". Manning is the county seat and geographical center of Clarendon County and is named for John Laurence Manning, governor of South Carolina from 1852-1854.
Clarendon County is located on the northern shore of Lake Marion. I-95 bisects the county and allows visitors convenient exits to investigate the Southern beauty, hospitality and charm Clarendon County offers. The Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce represents the towns of Manning, Summerton, Turbeville and Paxville.
Lake Marion is a reservoir in Clarendon County and has excellent fishing reviews. And every April the Clarendon County Striped Bass Festival is "THE BIGGEST". The Festival is a celebration of spring, a tribute to the beauty of the county, and a special salute to the Striped Bass, which put the Santee Cooper Lakes–Marion and Moultrie–and Clarendon County on the fishing map of the world.
