Marion County was created in 1785 and was originally known as Liberty County. However, four years later it was renamed Marion County, in honor Brigadier General Francis Marion, the famous "Swamp Fox" and a hero of the American Revolutionary War. Nestled under trees filled with Spanish Moss, Marion is located between Myrtle Beach, to the east and Florence to the west, two areas of the state that are growing rapidly.
Marion has often been called "the pretty little town on the way to the beach". From its beautiful rivers and hunting opportunities to its wonderful small town feel to its historical sites, Marion County provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors.
